Name: Will Butler

Where were you born and raised? I was born and raised in southeast, Kentucky. If you can picture where Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia meet, that was home for 27 years.

When did you begin running? September 18, 2012

How did you get started running? Mike and I were already exercising and trying to lose weight and we had the opportunity to sign up with a charity that would help us train for the Phoenix Rock and Roll that next January. We eventually dropped that group because we realized that we stink at fundraising but decided to stick with running. Our first 5K was the Moon Valley Grasshopper Bridge 5K in September of 2012. We had no clue what anything was (we were amazed that you could check your time right after the run). From that moment we were hooked. That following April, after the Boston bombing, we met AZTnT and the group has made us keep being in love with the sport.

Favorite distance to run: I like them all. I’ve been in wonderful 5Ks and some not-so-good marathons. I think if I had to choose I’d say any distance on the trails.

Favorite race: Geez – another tough one. Even though it contradicts with my love of trail I’d have to say the L.A. Marathon. It was my first big city event; there were tons of people and a great finish and it was also Mike’s first marathon so I really enjoyed being there and watching him cross the finish line.  But honestly, you throw a bridge on the course and you will probably have me coming back J.

Favorite Track N Trail event: This is a trick question J. I could say the Canyon trip as that is fun or pizza nights as it’s a chance to chat with other members but honestly, everyone in the group is so amazing that any event is fun. Twisting my arm? Then I’d have to say the trip to go up Mt. Humphreys.

Favorite place to run: I’m getting to where I really like trails and some of my favorites are in Northern Arizona. If I am running local though, if we can make it out to San Tan, those are great trails to run on but I have also gotten to where I really enjoy the track workouts on Wednesday nights.

Favorite Quote: I don’t know who said it or if we made it up really, but we have a motto that we follow: Celebrate finish lines and not finish times.

Favorite Song to Listen to while running: I actually do not run with music though sometimes it would be nice to be able to hear some Eminem blasting over my heavy breathing J.

If you could run anywhere in the world where would it be? Again with the hard questions J. The more runs I see and hear about, the longer my bucket list gets. I’d have to say the first one that was put on that bucket list though was the Great Wall of China Marathon.

Other Hobbies: I read a lot; I love taking classes and learning new things. I also like to cook (or try to), go to the gym, movies and watching sports.

Advice for new runners: Find someone that motivates and inspires you but avoid comparing yourself to others.
