Name: Sarah Mezo

Where were you born and raised? I was born and raised in Canby, Oregon. I moved to Arizona in December 2001.

When did you begin running?  I first began running back in 1998 when I was in college. I just ran around town, on my own, on and off for a few years. I started running regularly in 2007.

How did you get started running?I first began running in college to lose the Freshman 15, or in my case 30, that I had gained!  In 2007, again I started running to lose some weight  and I began to enjoy running and just continued from there.  I ran my first half in 2008, The Phoenix P.F. Chang’s, and after the race was over I swore I’d never run a half again. A year later, in 2009, I ran my first full marathon, The Phoenix P. F. Chang’s. The rest as they say, is history! Since then, I’ve ran one 50k, 3 full marathons and countless half marathons, 10k’s and 5k’s. Plus, many Ragnars.

Favorite distance to run:If you would have asked me this about 3.5 to 4 years ago I would have said half marathons. Now, after having a baby and working full time, I really enjoy 5k’s. I can go out and run a 5k without training and I can take Connor in the stroller with me if I need to.

Favorite race: This is a tough question, so many fun races! My top three races that I really enjoyed were; Hood to Coast, Bridge of the Gods Half Marathon, and Pemberton 50k.

Favorite Track N Trail event:There are so many fun AZTNT events, it’s difficult to pick just one! But, I’d have to say the Grand Canyon trips have been my favorite!

Favorite place to run:  Trails! I love the trails. Unfortunately, most of my runs are on the canal now, but that’s okay because I’m always with a great group of people!

Favorite Quote:  “In running, it doesn’t matter whether you come in first, in the middle of the pack, or last. You can say, ‘I have finished.’ There is a lot of satisfaction in that.”
-Fred Lebow

Favorite Song to listen to while running:When I first started running I “couldn’t” run without music. Now, I rarely listen to music when I run and if I do, it is country music because that’s what I like to listen to.

If you could run anywhere in the world where would it be?  Hmmmm, I think I would have to say Ireland.

Other Hobbies:Hiking, drinking beer, watching Paw Patrol, going to Disneyland, hanging with family and friends.

Advice for new runners:Start out slow, don’t give up and don’t compare yourself to others. Stay hydrated and keep putting one foot in front of the other. If you have to walk, walk. Don’t take it too seriously, go out and have fun!
